Herbs:  Specific herbs have been proven useful in preventing gallstones. Cholagogues (which stimulate the gallbladder to contract) and  choleretics (used to stimulate the liver to produce more bile), serve to reduce the risk of developing gallstones. These herbs include: Turmeric, citrus fruits, dried ginger, black pepper, long pepper, hing, Gokshura Punarnavadi, Chicory, Dandelion, Olive and Sunflower Oil.  Mineral complexes like Saindhava lavanam and Yavakshaar may also be used for a similar purpose.

Saindhava lavanam (or even salt) can be taken on an empty stomach in the morning in a glass of hot water twice a week. After taking this, lie down for about 30-45 minutes on your right side.


Vitamin C serves to convert cholesterol to bile acids, decreasing gallstone formation. You can find it in citrus fruits and fruit juices or as a supplement. While Ayurvedic supplements include: Gokshuradi Guggulu, Liverole, and Arogyavardhini Bati.

Castor oil pack applied over the gallbladder area is a great gallstones ayurveda treatment. Soak a cloth in a cup of castor oil and place it over the gallbladder area, covering it with plastic and a heating pad. It should stay on for half an hour once a day for a month.
